The Supersonics pulled off the biggest upset in FABL Showtime history in Thursday night’s 9 PM nightcap by beating the 3rd seeded Pink Panthers 38-36 in a thrilling come from behind win.
The game started off slowly and the Panthers cruised to a 26-18 halftime edge as coach Ihasz had his boys playing stifling defense while putting up a respectable 26 points. The second half was a different story.
Hillman’s green team came out of the half with an energy level we haven’t seen from them all year. They contested every shot and rebound and outscored the pink team 11-7 for the quarter and closed the gap to four points 33-29. The smell of upset hung heavy in the air at St Stephen’s Field House.
The fourth quarter opened with the green team running a set play that freed up Kevin Maggio for his only points of the game, a 20 foot bomb to cut the lead to 1 point. The Sonics defense, spearheaded by Sean Keenan and Kevin Buckley, dropped the hammer on the panthers by allowing only 3 free throws in the entire fourth quarter. They shut down league scoring champ Alex Murri and held him to 2 fourth quarter points, 10 for the game.
Murri lead the losers in scoring with Michael Carr getting 6 and Hunter Price and Brandon Knorr getting 5 each. The winners were lead by Kevin Souders and Kevin Buckley with 12 apiece and Rhitik Joshi with 5 points. Sean Keenan did not score but he had 7 blocks for the game including 5 in the 4th quarter. The Sonics advance to the Elite 8 and play the Purple People Eaters, winners tonight 46-35 over Money, in Saturday’s 6:00 matchup.

The 10th seed Sharks upset 7th seeded Reds 45-39 in a game where Gray Gams scored 22 points for the winners and Vince Bello scored 9 for the losers. It was a 2 point game at the end of three quarters until the blue team out defensed the red team and held them to 6 points while putting up 10 in crunch time for the win.
The hot handed Blue Waffles continued their high powered, high scoring trend beating the Almost Brown Bombers 57-44 in a game the featured flashy play from Senior Ryan Scheufele, 20 points, tough defense and consistent scoring from Alex Vucco, 12 points, and consistent play, 6 points and 8 blocked shots, by Devin Naylon. Saturday’s games start at 5 PM and feature two upstart teams, The Sonics (14 seed) and The Sharks (10 seed) looking to see if Cinderella can make it to the ball!!! In their meeting earlier this season, PPE bested the Sonics 46-38. In week 10, the Wolverines manhandled the Sharks 50-31 but since that drubbing, the blue team has won four out of five games.
In the upper part of the draw, top seed Ballerz host a resurgent Team team in a rematch of their week 14 60-56 barnburner win in what promises to be the best game of the night. Gold Rush squares off against the Blue Waffles in a rematch of their week 8 54-52 contest that was won by the ridiculously named light blue team.
Saturday should be a blast!!!!
